Yes, I'm a fan. In fact, I've even been to a concert - the year Carrie Underwood won. My friend Becky and I went planning to take my then 10 year old niece, but I really wanted to go myself too. My niece ended up getting sick, so we just went the two of us! It was the year Bo Bice (who I was really following) fell and broke his ankle on stage and was out of the tour for the rest of the season.
Unfortunately, I had to miss the finale last night. I had a business meeting to attend, so I had to sacrifice. Thankfully, my friend Lisa texted me at 10:01pm, on my way home and revealed the results, so I didn't feel too out of the loop.
I'm not ashamed of my liking of the show for my age. In fact, I read in an article today that, "Viewership for teenagers 12-to-17 for 'Idol' was down this season, and the median age of an 'Idol' viewer, once in the mid-30s, is now up to 42, according to Nielsen Media Research."
So, according to this statistic, I'm a baby in the show's fan base. Obviously these statistics swayed the votes for the results - people connected with the story of this guy and related to his maturity instead of the "pop" style of a younger performer.
At any rate, I was pleased to see David Cook's victory. I liked him from the start, thought he had a great "average person" story, and had above average talent. He was confident and mature through the season, had a different style, and I just plain thought he was good. I'm fascinated by watching people pursue their dreams and achieve them. It has been said that the average person loses their ability to dream by the age of 30. We get caught in our ruts and just keep doing what we're doing with blinders on. I loved watching this guy take a risk and make it happen for his life.
I had an invitation to go to the concert that will be visiting our area in August. Unfortunately, I had to decline because I'll be in North Carolina that night. I was very disappointed. However, Dan's mom is going, so she can take the camera and fill me in!
