Rodent Wars

This winter, we noticed we had some rodents join us in our warm home. At night we could hear them scurrying around in the walls, and running about in the attic. I finally got around to buying some bait packets in hopes to slow down the infiltration. They ate the packets in the attic and I stopped hearing them at night. Easy enough.

One morning, as I was getting ready for the day, I noticed some shaving-like materials in my drawer of the bathroom vanity. Upon closer examination, I realized something had eaten through one of my small lotion bottles. Completely disgusted, I donned rubber gloves and carefully took out each item in all 3 drawers and lysol-ed them. As I got to the 3rd drawer, I discovered a heaping pile of corn kernels buried under some hairbrushes. Hmmm...do mice do that? We deduced it may in fact be a chipmunk inhabiting our cabinet.

So, we set the Havahart trap. Now, I don't really have-a-heart for these animals, but it was the best way to catch them. Last night, after setting peanut butter and crackers on the trap, I was laying in bed and heard it enter the cabinet. I was waiting and waiting for the loud thud of the trap closing in it's victim, but never heard it. When it was quiet, I carefully opened the door to find it had eaten everything off the tray, but somehow didn't set the trap. What was
this thing?? I was starting to picture this animal, outsmarting us humans, laughing in the walls as they said, "did you see what they put out for us tonight?"

So, tonight on his way home, Dan bought one of those sticky pad traps. Within 1/2 hour, I heard the scurrying again. I bravely peeked into the cabinet to find the culprit stuck to the pad. Ha ha, whach you gonna do neoww??? I decided to take it's picture as it struggled to free itself from it's tacky demise. Did you know mice blink when the flash goes off? Just glad it was indeed a mouse and not a chipmunk. Wonder how many more there are...

What a battle! I loved that. We had the same problem with cockroaches in Cali. I know...gross huh? We called them (when we lived there) the "ant of the west" b/c we never saw ants and cockroaches were everwhere. Did you then set the mouse free or kill it?

I must say with a small bit of guilt, that Dan placed the mouse, still stuck to the trap, out on the back deck that night. The next morning, the mouse and the trap were no where to be found. I think the neighborhood cats found a jackpot.
